EVERYBODY who saw what was left of John Imenvbore, wondered at the vehemence and brutality with which his assailants attacked and cut up the young man.
The gruesome sight of nearly dismembered limbs and a torso that received more than eight cuts, were enough to make many throw up.
Worse still, it is now known that the suspected killers of the 26- year-old allegedly live in the
same neighbourhood with him at Oke-Afo, Morogbo, on the outskirts of Lagos.
His father, Mr. Godwin Imenvbore, still distraught with the pain of the death of his son, says justice must be done and that those who allegedly killed John, his first son who was a welder and footballer, must be made to pay the price of their crime.
Already, the bereaved family says they have cause to worry, alleging underhanded activity and foul play from men of the Lagos State Police Command attached to the Homicide Division of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
They have specifically accused the police at the unit of cover-up and failure to arrest accomplices in the crime, named by one Anuoluwapo Samuel, the prime suspect.
It was understood that Anuoluwapo Samuel had named the son of a prominent traditional ruler in Ogun State and four other persons as accomplices who joined him in cutting John to death on that fateful May 2, 2012 on Oloruntobi Street, Oko-Afo, Marogbo.
The family spokesman, Mr. Rowland Imenvbore, a lecturer in the University of Lagos told The Guardian: “We know that we cannot bring our son back to life, but at least, we deserve justice in our own country. They killed our son on his way from playing football at about 8.pm and dumped him by the roadside.
“People in the area alerted us that his body was lying along the road. The boy worked with at his father’s welding workshop and played football on a part-time basis. He was a gentleman to the core and everyone in the area knew him.
“The story we heard from the suspect, who is now at the SCID was that they asked John to join their gang and he refused and exchanged words with them.
“They got angry and attacked him with a machete. We tried to rush him to the hospital, but he gave up the ghost there. His body is still at the General Hospital as we are waiting for the autopsy report before we can bury him.”
He continued: “The incident happened this month, on May 2 and we reported the matter to Morogbo Police Station from where the matter was transferred to SCID after they had taken statements. “Our grouse is that the prime suspect has named his accomplices in the crime, including the son of a highly-placed traditional ruler and the police seem not to be taking the matter serious.
“What we want now is that those persons he named as partners in the crime should be arrested and brought to justice. We want the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar to intervene on this matter and call his men to order. The innocent boy was to travel to Ghana with his football team for a tournament, but his death has put an end to all those plans.”
An officer at SCID, Panti said there was no attempt to cover up the matter or protect any suspect and that investigations would continue.... [Investigations will continue indeed...naija police we hail oo!]
