Police in Enugu State have arrested nine persons for allegedly belonging to cult groups terrorising the state.
The arrest came as the
Enugu State University of Technology authorities denied involvement of
ESUT’s students in cult-related killings in the state.
No fewer than 14 people have been killed in parts of the state capital, Enugu, since Friday last week when the
killings began.
The Police Public Relations
Officer in the state, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on
Wednesday that items recovered from the suspects included a mask, two
rounds of AK-47 ammunition and an ECOWAS passport.
ESUT Public Relations
Officer, Mr. Osita Ugwuoti, said there was no way ESUT students of the
university could be involved in cult activities because they were on a
two-week vacation.
He said, “If there are
claims by the suspects that they are students of ESUT, such names need
to be verified. As I speak with you, ESUT students are currently on
vacation for two weeks having ended the first semester. The second
semester will commence on June 25, 2012.”
