TWO weeks after his father was released from captivity by kidnappers following the alleged payment of he sum of N1.5 million, secondary school leaver, Inemesit Akpan is still being held in Akwa Ibom State.
Sources close to the family said Inemesit’s father, Mr. Sunday Akpan who is a businessman in Ikot Ekpene was
kidnapped on August 3, 2012.
The sources said , the kidnappers numbering about four and dressed in army uniform trailed Akpan, a dealer in building materials from his shop in the evening of the fateful day and seized him at the frontage of his residence in Ikot Ekpene local council just as he stepped out from his vehicle to open the gate to his house.
Eyewitness account said when his wife who saw what was going on tried to raise alarm, the kidnappers threatened to shoot her as they immediately escaped with her husband at gun point to an unknown destination.
It is gathered that, few days after the incident, the kidnappers made contact with the family through a Pastor in Mr. Akpan’s church demanding the sum of N30 million as ransom.
It was learnt that the family raised the sum of about N1.5 million which was given to the son, Inemesit to give to the kidnappers at an agreed location in order to secure the release of his father.
But the kidnappers , after collecting the money , still detained the boy, asking whether the money was for groundnut, ice-fish or chewing- gum.
They told the father go and bring the balance of the money before his son would be released.
Confirming the incident the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson said the police are following the matter and are on top of the situation.
He frowned at kidnap victims paying ransom, stressing that, the command had always told victims not to pay without involving the police.
