Legislative activity at National Assembly in Abuja today was brought to a halt as staff members protest illegal deductions of pension fund from their salaries, fraudulent housing scheme and non-payment of allowances.
The workers who converged at the lobby of the complex in their thousands with placards prevented senators and members of the House of Representatives from gaining entry into the chambers.
Some of the
inscription in their placards read : "Stop deduction of pension from our salary",
N10,000 Owners Occupier Housing is fraudulent", "Pay us our allowances".
The protesters vowed to continue with their protests until their demands are met.
Armed security operatives tried to disperse the workers several times but the protesters resisted as they kept chanting anti- government slogans. It took the timely intervention of the Senate President, David Mark who came to address the workers to calm the agitated workers.
Mr. Mark promised that all their grievances would be addressed as he appealed to them to sheath their sword and embrace dialogue in resolving crisis.
It would be recalled that the management of National Assembly deducted N10,000 monthly from the salary of the staff for Owner-Occupier Housing Scheme which the staff has described as fraudulent .
