An Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded a 53-year-old woman, Racheal Abodunrinde, in prison for allegedly killing a 10-month-old baby by hitting him with a stone.

Chief Magistrate Adelegan Johnson gave the order for remand pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution in the State Ministry of Justice.
The Prosecutor, Ibrahim Zakari, had earlier told the court that the mother of the boy, Iyabo Fadahunsi, left the baby in her room to clean the compound when she suddenly heard a strange sound.
Mr. Zakari said the baby’s mother rushed to the room only to meet the accused allegedly smashing a big stone on the head of her child and killing him instantly.
He said the accused committed the offence on April 30 at about 12.50 p.m. at Iju, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo state.
The offence, he said, was contrary to and punishable under section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The accused was a relative of the baby’s father.
The case was adjourned till June 21.
