Chinonso |
Even sadder was that the subsequent transfusion turned out to be a disaster. Somehow, Chinonso was given the wrong blood. Immediately after the transfusion, his parents noticed that he was not growing well. It was discovered that he was suffering from Spastic Cerebral Palsy, which affected his limbs and speech. And till
date, Chinonso is suffering from the disease.Distraught, his mother, Mrs. Ifeoma Onyekwelu, recounts how it all began: “My son was given wrong blood and the process of flushing out the wrong blood plunged him into crises which eventually landed us in this problem.”
She disclosed that Chinonso was given A+ (Positive) instead of O (-) (Negative) and in the process of flushing out the blood, he almost died due to lack of oxygen in his blood. Although he survived the crisis and was subsequently discharged, the Onyekwelus soon noticed that he was not growing like other children and returned to the hospital for further diagnosis.
Chinonso was taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba and he was referred to the Neurological Department of the hospital. Thereafter, he was referred to the Physiotherapy Department for further treatment.
“Shortly after this, we were again referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi for specialist treatment. We went there for some time until one day, his breathing system suddenly changed abnormally and we had to rush him to the hospital.
“A surgical operation was carried out on him by the same hospital to remove an unusual growth in his throat. After this operation, the breathing problem stopped but the previous problem persisted,” Mrs Onyekwelu added.
They continued taking him to Igbobi for the recommended physiotherapy until recently when they stumbled on a similar case story published in one national newspaper.
After reading the story of a small girl who once had similar symptoms and is now living normally after undergoing surgery in the United States, published in the paper; the Onyekwelus saw a ray of hope. They consulted the same hospital and the response was positive.
The hospital’s management asked them to conduct NRI scan and other tests on Chinonso. It was discovered that the 10- year-old problem was Spastic Cerebral Palsy which affected his limbs (mobility skills) and speech. They assured that the disease which makes Chinonso crawl around like a toddler, could be corrected through a surgery.
According to Mrs Onyekwelu, it was discovered that the surgery could be done by the Centre for Cerebral Palsy Spasticity at the St. Louis Children Hospital, Missouri, United States at the cost of $53,000 (N7.95 million) excluding flight ticket. The operation has been scheduled for June/July this year.
Now that the problem has been identified, the Onyekwelus who are traders don’t have the money to foot the bill. They are appealing to kind-hearted Nigerians to help their son to live a normal life before it gets late.
