Pandemonium broke out in Eket, Akwa Ibom State on Monday as a man, suspected to be insane, killed an elderly man because passers-by did not give him alms.
A mob however visited him with instant jungle justice.

Sources said some people had noticed the beggar’s sudden violent behaviour but ignored him, thinking it was the normal occasional tantrums by insane persons.
But the unexpected happened when the man suddenly dragged an elderly man from the seat of a moving motorcycle and smashed his head on the ground. He followed it up with using a block to hit the victim.
According to eyewitness account, the suspect took to his heels after killing the elderly man and injuring the others but some angry youths gave him a hot chase, caught up with him and beat him to death before the police arrived.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson (DSP), who confirmed the incident, described it as unfortunate. He, however, said those who killed the begger had committed murder.
