condemn the Boko Haram violence in parts of the country.
The protesters, under the auspices of Unity of Muslims and Christians in
Nigeria, gathered at the Mile One central mosque in Diobu area of the
Rivers State capital, from where they began a procession.
Leaders of the Hausa community as well
as Christian and Muslim leaders in the state, marched to the Government
House, Port Harcourt, carrying placards with inscriptions such as:
‘Muslim and Christians are serving a peaceful God’ and ‘Shun violence.’
Addressing journalists during the
demonstration, one of the group leaders, Pastor Godwill Okafor, said,
“We came together to exchange ideas and to make the public know that
Muslims and Christians are serving one God. We intend to achieve that by
bringing them together with the view to removing that erroneous belief
in them.”
Also, leader of the Islamic preachers in
Rivers, Alhaji Haliru Imam, said the coming together of Christians and
Muslims was to condemn the killing of innocent people in parts of the
country in the name of one religion.
“We live peacefully with the people of
Rivers State and with what is happening in other parts of the country,
some youths here who are ignorant of the true situation of what is
happening, call us names such as Boko Haram,” he said.
