Ophthalmologist warns Nigerians against excessive use of eye drops
A Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital has warned Nigerians
against the use of non-prescribed eye drops.
Dr. Nkiru Uzoakarere told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that excessive use of eye drops, especially those not prescribed by eye specialists, could lead to secondary glaucoma.
Uzoakarere lamented that glaucoma had been proved to be the second commonest cause of irreversible blindness, adding that ignorance was a constraint toward combating it.
She said that another cause of secondary glaucoma could be trauma to the eyes while the primary type glaucoma developed without a known cause.
The consultant explained that the teaching hospital, in collaboration with the eye specialist hospital in the state, offered free eye test to 500 people recently to mark the World Glaucoma Week.
According to her, the screening also involved free medication, laser checks and surgery to the patients.
