The Provost of the Adeyemi College of
Education, Ondo in Ondo State, Prof. Adeyemi Idowu, on Tuesday said that a female student of the institution, a.k.a
Idayat,
allegedly led scores of her colleagues to vandalise his car and 48 other
vehicles parked within the school premises when they went on the
rampage on Monday.
The students had on Monday
protested against the alleged mysterious deaths of some of their
colleagues in recent time, which led to them to vandalised the provost’s office, his car, 48
other vehicles and other structures within the campus.
Prof Idowu explained that he was holding a management meeting when the students stormed his office.
He said, “We had earlier on Monday held a
meeting with the students’ union executives where we agreed to hold an
interdenominational service to pray on the alleged mysterious deaths.
“They claimed that 20 of their
colleagues had died but they cannot mention more than four people who
had lost their lives in the last six months and there is nothing
mysterious about the deaths.
“While the meeting was ongoing, I
suddenly saw a young lady, who we later identified as Idayat, armed with
an iron, went straight to my official car and started vandalising it
while she directed others to carry similar action on vehicles of other
members of staff.
“She occasionally ordered her colleagues
to haul stones at my office whenever she sensed that someone was
peeping though the window.”
The students had during the protest
vandalised classrooms, eateries, and banks on the campus. They also
blocked the Ondo-Ore Expressway and made bonfire on the road, which resulted
in gridlock.
