When Abubakar Buba, 23, went to a
private clinic in Bauchi for treatment of typhoid fever he got more than
he bargained for. The doctor ended up removing his kidneys and now he
is
battling with his life at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University
Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi.
This is even as a Kaduna-based
physician, Dr Mohammed Bello, said a patient cannot survive with no
kidney unless if he is placed 100% on dialysis machine. “It is possible
to live with only one kidney if the other is removed. But no one can
live without both kidneys, unless he is placed on dialysis machine which
plays the role of a kidney.”
According to the Director of
Administration of Miyetti Allah Cattle Rearers Bauchi State Chapter
Alhaji Sadiq Ibrahim Ahmed, Buba went to the clinic in Bauchi
complaining of stomach ache, diarrhoea and fever. But the doctor rushed
him into theatre for operation and removed Abubakar’s kidneys saying
that they have been damaged by typhoid.
Ibrahim said after the incident they
were referred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano where the doctors
confirmed that Abubakar’s two kidneys were removed. They referred him
back to Bauchi for dialyses. He said the patient needs N5million for
kidney transplant to live and it must be done outside the country.
He said the doctor took the patient to
the theatre without even giving the family chance to sign a guarantor
form and follow other normal administrative process in the clinic.
One of the family members who pleaded
anonymity said, “We spend N8, 000 for dialysis in Kano and he needs
three sessions in a week.
“We were referred back to ABTBUTH,
Bauchi because it is cheaper and nearer home to us here. In Bauchi we
pay N5, 000 for dialysis.”
Investigations by Weekly Trust revealed
that Bauchi State Police Command has arrested the doctor and the nurse
that carried out the operation.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP
Hassan Mohammed Auyo confirmed the arrest. He said “the doctor that
carried out the operation and a nurse are with us at the State Criminal
Investigation Department they are helping us with our investigation.”
ASP Auyo said the offence if established
is a criminal offence that has to do with threat to life and we will
charge them to court.
Efforts to get the Chief Medical
Director of ABTBUTH Dr Mohammed Alkali to comment were unsuccessful.
When called on phone he advised our correspondent to contact him during
working hours.
Senior personnel in the Hospital told
Weekly Trust correspondent that their main concern now is how to help
the boy to survive; first we need money to take him abroad for kidney
transplant and we need someone who will donate a kidney for him.
Weekly Trust gathered that the League of
Friends, ATBUTH has been footing the cost of his dialysis while the
family is appealing to Nigerians to help Abubakar get a transplant.
