A source claiming to be a sympathizer of the militant Boko Haram group has posted dozens of personnel records of some sixty State Security Service officials on a Nigerian website.
The leaked information includes home addresses, bank records, names of siblings and wives of the security officers.
Some of those on the list appear to be
retirees, having left the agency in the mid-90s and early 2001.
At the top of the list is the name and details pertaining to Ita Essien Ekpeyong, the current Director General of the State Security Service. It appears with his code number DS 0018, the date he was appointed in 1984 and his projected retirement in 2019. His state of origin, bank account number at the UBA in Abuja and the telephone number of his son were also posted on the widely-read website.
Spy service veterans confessed to be shocked at the security breach according to Associated Press. Nigeria's intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are said to be too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa's most populous nation.
"I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet," said one former agent, who declined to be named. " I was surprised that such information could be leaked."
Though the records have been removed, it is feared that many visitors to the site had time to make copies before the information was taken down.
There has been no official response to the release of personnel records by the SSS.
