THE endemic cardiovascular defection, otherwise known as kidney or heart-related failure is still ravaging Nigerians.
Unfortunately, however, the worse hit of this terminal disease have been the helpless children, whose parents have been thrown into the deepest anguish, as they battle to rescue their wards from the jaw of death.
One of those unfortunate situations is the story of this six-month-old Abdul-Rahmon Adebayo. Abdul-Rahmon, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Adebayo Saheed Adewale, who lives in Ijegun, Lagos,
was recently
diagnosed of having a hole in his heart since two months old.
This defect has not only stunted his growth, but subjected his low-income parents to pain, making them run from pillar to post in search of cure for their son.
Speaking with The Guardian, Abdul-Rahmon’s father, in an emotional-laden tone, narrated how his son’s condition was discovered.
According to him: “My son was detected to have a large hole in his heart when he was two- month old, I discovered that he was vomiting so I had to take him to the General hospital Isolo for medical check up and the doctor prescribed some drugs for him but I later told him to do a general check up for him that was when he detected that he has a large hole in his heart.
“I didn’t want to rely on the doctors report so I had to take him to another General hospital in Ikeja where ECC and ECHO test were carried out on him. The result was the same. The doctor recommended that surgery be done quickly before my boy is affected by other diseases,” he added.
He said series of tests have been conducted on Abdul-Rahmon, which had already cost the family thousands of naira.
But to rectify the defect, Abdul-Rahmon needs to undergo a surgical operation at Apollo Hospital, Chennai, India at a cost of two million naira.
But Adebayo, a teacher, cannot afford the operation from his teaching job. His wife, a full house wife mother, also cannot be of help.
The parents, therefore, appeal to Nigerians to assist them to save their dying son.
Already, Adewale said he has depleted his life savings in the course of administering treatments and purchase of prescribed drugs to manage his son’s condition. “At times we have to go to the hospital every week, depending on his condition and we need to spend a lot of money in carrying out tests and buying drugs. That is why I am pleading to well meaning Nigerians to help save the life of my first and only son from the shadow of death,” Mr. Adewale said
In her words, Abdul-Rahmon’s mother, Khadijat, explained that it breaks her hearts witnessing the excruciating pains that her son goes through without being able to do anything about it.
According to her, “Abdul Rahmon feels very uncomfortable and at times, he develops cough and catarrh, which makes me feel unhappy because I could not help or save him.”
