THE saying that it never rains, it pours clearly describes the
dilemma of Mr Emeka Ogbu, a 31-year-old Nigerian who is visually
challenged, battling with bilateral knock knee deformity and suffers a
severe Osteoathritis of both knees.
Currently with the
Bethseda Home for the Blind, Yaba, Lagos, Emeka has coped well with his deformities until recently when his knock-knee worsened and walking has become a problem.
A visit to the National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi revealed that he has a severe Genu Valgum with instability in both knees. Radiological examination, according to the same hospital, shows a severe Osteoarthritis of both knees with evidence of bone loss in the femoral and tibia plateau.
He is referred abroad for a total knee replacement surgery with the explanation that the deformity and the bone loss especially, will make such a procedure difficult with the prosthesis available in Nigeria.
Emeka will need an estimated N4, 894, 000 (four million, eight hundred and ninety four thousand) for treatment in India to be able to walk again.
Unfortunately, Emeka who is currently surviving on charity and whatever he gets from the Bethseda Home for the Blind, has no hope of raising such money.
It is with that anguish and hope for a better tomorrow that he appeals to Nigerians and corporate organizations to come to his aid and help make life worth living for him again.
The founder of the home, Mrs Chioma Ohakwe, also lends her voice in calling for assistance for Emeka describing him as very brilliant and productive in spite of his disabilities.
There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men, no greater contribution than to help the weak and no greater satisfaction than to have done it well.
Emeka who resides at No 8, Popo Street, Yaba, opposite Tejuosho Market can also be reached on:

Union Bank Account No 0003280350 of the Bethesda Home for the Blind.
