The only thing that came to mind when I read about the massacre in Mubi was the Holocaust of the World War II.
In case you have not heard about this, it was the genocide of about 6million European Jews by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party because of their biological affiliation – something that was a God-given right to them! This genocide was carried out in stages and included tortures, slave labour, burnings, and all manner of cruel killing methods that you can imagine. Just staring at the pictures makes a full grown man cringe in fear – it was a very sad experience!
20 (in a bid to remain on the conservative side) students sleeping – you never know what this means until you think it through properly! Imagine this - Just the day before, one of those students left the lecture room and went to have dinner with friends and had an evening call with his ageing mum telling her that he is almost through with the
program and will be able to take good care of her. This young man goes back to his dorm and does a couple of chores, talked with his friends and lay on his bed, thinking about what he would like to do in a few months when he graduates. He thinks about his fiancée and the great life they would have and raise 3 kids together. He prays and finally falls asleep with a smile – the future looks so promising and beautiful!
In the middle of the night, he is forced to wake up by unknown men and he looks around and sees his other colleagues already standing there in the dark, quivering from fear. He is asked for his name and based on his response, asked to move to a side and before he could realize why his name was being asked, he is shot! His dreams stop at that moment; his ageing mum will have to find succour elsewhere; his fiancée will start her search, with a broken heart, all over again. More so, we just lost another gem to a nation that eats its inhabitants.
A nation that prioritizes trivialities and takes one more death as a regrettable loss! While 1 loss to a nation of 160million people seems like collateral damage, it is a total devastation of 1 man’s future, one mother’s hope and one ladies dream. It’s an additional footnote to the quest for a Sovereign National Conference; it’s a dent in our faith in the nation called Nigeria. But not 1, but more than 20.
Truly, I weep for my nation!
