IT is important to determine the actual cause(s) of toothache (odontalgia) and gum (periodontal) disease - this can be done by a dental health-care practitioner who may also rule out other health problems like oral cancer, sinusitis, ear infections and heart problems such as angina pectoris which may not originate from a tooth or the jaw.
Studies
have shown that gum diseases may increase the risks and the severity of
stroke, heart attacks, diabetes, digestive disorders, and the
like. Therefore, the successful and long-term treatment of any dental problem depends on the correct diagnosis by a dentist.
Toothache should not be left untreated; negligence may lead to more serious health problems. Abscessed tooth can lead to severe infections and blood poisoning. A persistent toothache accompanied with fever may be indicative of an abscessed tooth. Although there are cases whereby an abscessed tooth will be painless but only shows up when an x-ray is carried out.
However, there are many home and herbal remedies that can give quick and short-term relief or prevent the death of a tooth, pulp or dental infection or abscess, which could lead to tooth extraction. But before we examine some of these remedies, let us first of all consider some of the things that make for good oral hygiene, strong and healthy teeth:
*We have noted before that tooth decay or dental cavities are commonly caused by excessive intake of junk foods, all forms of sugar, candy, white flour products, refined carbohydrates, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, acidic and sour foods, soft and fizzy drinks, etc. All these food items should be avoided. However, if they are to be taken at all, it should be at meal times and in moderation. Frequent intakes of small snacks, very hot and very cold and very sweet foods should be avoided.
*Eating healthy and wholesome diets - (foods rich in fibres, vitamin C and minerals like Calcium) such as tree-ripen fruits, deep green vegetables, root vegetables, whole grains, seeds and nuts are very crucial in keeping a good and healthy clean mouth. Vitamin C and Calcium help to strengthen the gum and teeth and also prevent tooth decay and gum erosion.
*Smoking should be avoided - Tobacco smoke has been found to reduce the production of saliva in the mouth, and saliva helps to keep the surface of the teeth moist and clean.
*The teeth and tongue should be brushed gently in a circular motion twice daily; and in-between teeth should be cleaned using dental floss or inter-dental brushes and cleansers - preferably after each meal and at bedtime; this will help remove any food debris or particles trapped between teeth or between gum and teeth. Also, regular teeth brushing will remove any plaque (a mixture of saliva, food and bacteria) that may have accumulated overtime under the gum lines), and this usually results in painful bacterial infection, inflammation and sore gum.
*Many dental health-care practitioners recommend that tooth brushes should be changed every four to six weeks. After prolonged usage, weak brushes can harbour certain bacteria in the mouth that convert simple sugars into acids. The acid formed then gradually softens and dissolves or disintegrates the protective tooth enamel and creates holes or cavities.
*It is recommended that even those that do not have dental problems should also have an annual dental check-up and those that suffer chronic bad breathe (halitosis) should have their teeth checked by a dentist because 85 per cent cases of bad breathe is usually caused by tooth problems.
Natural And Home Remedies For Toothache
When toothache strikes, no matter the cause, the first step is to keep the mouth clean, and to prevent plaque formation and food debris from lodging into a cavity. Take a mouthful of warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water) and rinse the mouth vigorously after each meal and at bedtime.
The saltwater can equally be used as gargle or mouth wash several times a day. The salt can be substituted with four – six drops of Tea Tree Oil.
Alternatively, the following can be used as mouthwash or gargle in cases of toothache:
*Diluted Apple cider vinegar (an antiseptic mouth wash).
*Three percent Hydrogen peroxide.
*A solution of Lime juice (75ml) and 10 Cowries, which has been allowed to stand for 2 to 3 days. This is a good source of Calcium and Vitamin C.
*A solution prepared with Alum and potash.
*Aloe vera gel.
*The juice extracted from the fresh leaves of Resurrection plant,
A tea or infusion prepared with any of the herbs like: Lemongrass, Phyllanthus, Moringa, Sage, Calendula, Horsetail, Chamomile, Myrrh, etc, can be taken orally as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial to help reduce pain, infection and swelling.
Any of the followings can be applied directly on the affected tooth, to reduce pain, inflammation and swellings and draw out toxins and infections:
*The tooth can be swabbed with cotton soaked in either Clove oil, Vitamin E, Lime juice or any Spirit.
*Ice cube or hot Tea bag or the juice extracted from the leaves of herbs like Guava, Resurrection plant, Good luck plant, Spondia or Fever plant can be used as compresses on the tooth.
*A paste made from any of the following: Garlic, Onion, ground Cloves – individually, a mixture of Red Pepper (Cayenne) and Ginger; a mixture of Turmeric, Cayenne and Honey; and a mixture of Activated Charcoal and Salt.
*Decayed tooth is usually extracted or removed by a dentist. However, in natural medicine, a decayed tooth is gradually removed by regular application of undiluted juice extracted from raw, fresh leaves of Fever plant (Efinrin nla – Yoruba or Nchuanwu – Igbo).
