s.O.s: Help Great To Live A Great Life...

GREAT-MORGAN-29-9-2012

IT was during a journey to Ondo State hometown of Great’s mother on September 11, 2005. Like any other kid, 13-year-old Great Morgan relished the opportunity of visiting his maternal relations.
But on their way coming back to Lagos in a private car , a disaster struck between Ijebu-ode and Ishagamu. It was a brutal accident that caused severe injuries to all inside the vehicle.
Though no
life was lost, the injuries were life-threatening. Teenage Great suffered the worst. His two legs, arms were fractured. The face was battered.
Treatment in the past six years have virtually restored his limbs; but the face remains badly scarred.
According to the medical report from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Great sustained Avulsion Injury on the forehead, abrasion injuries to the face, bilateral humeral fracture and closed fracture of the left femur.
He needs N3.7m to undergo a surgical operation in India. And Dr. Kashyap, Senor Consultant, Department of Plastic surgery, Forts Hospital (New Delhi, India) has confirmed that Great is being scheduled for facial contractures and skin grafting, revealing, “estimated duration of stay for investigation and treatment would be 5 days in hospital and 3-4 weeks in India.”
An indigene of Udonmili, Rivers State and the only child of his parents, he says he desires to be an engineer.
“Please I want Nigerians to help me with my face.  I want to be healthy and strong again. My parents have sought for help in so many places but it’s not forthcoming. I want to be an engineer but with this look, it’s hard to actualize that dream,” the boy cries.
At his school, P&P Secondary School, Mushin, Lagos, he suffers taunts, rejection and due to his scarred look.
According to Great,  “I find it difficult to mix with my peers in school. Many of them avoid me; nobody wants to be associated with me and this makes me badly depressed.”
Great’s Father, Okey Morgan, feels bad to see his son in such a condition, noting that he had made several efforts as a father who desires the wellbeing of his son.
“Each time, I wake up and see him, I feel very bad. Hs condition leaves me sad. We’ve been to different churches, written to the Government and other groups as well as personalities. But no one has come to our rescue.”
He lamented that the accident affected Great’s eyes such that he now one of his eyes does not close even when he is asleep.
“It took me time to come to The Guardian because there were some people that I know and who promised to help out. But unfortunately, nobody came to our rescue. Since the time of the accident, I have spent roughly N800, 000 and we are still spending more.  I am into estate management but the situation of the country is not favorable,” he says.
