A COMPUTER with its accessories or a good job from well-meaning
Nigerians can save Adewole Raphael Lawal, a 35-year-old visually
impaired man from taking to
alms -begging. He is therefore is asking for help from Nigerians to assist him to buy a computer to open a business centre to practice his profession.
Born in Ago-Oba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Adewole went to the School of the Handicapped in Abeokuta from 1986 to 1990. Next, he attended Egbado College, Ilaro and left in 2000 to the College of Education Special in Oyo for his NCE and passed out in 2004/ 2005.
He read English /SVI for visually impaired for his NCE. He also has a certificate in computer from South West Resource Centre in Abeokuta.
“ Thereafter, I looked for a job to no avail. I later worked with Bethsaida (Yaba, Lagos) Hope for the Blind from 2007 to 2010. They were paying me N8,000 per month. The money could not carter for my expenses so I left in 2010. Since then, I have not got anything else to do.
I need a computer to open a business centre,” he said.
Lawal recalled that he lost his sight when he was small. “What I can remember, is that I was in school that time. I was feeling headache, they took me to the State Hospital in Abeokuta. The doctor said the headache had affected my eyes and that they should take me to the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan,” he said.
He went to Ibadan with his dad, Mr. Sowumi Lawal. “When we got to UCH, we saw the doctor, who tested my eyes and said that I was having glaucoma,” he said.
An eye drop was recommended for him, before an operation. Unfortunately, he said, as soon as he used the eye drop on September 26, 1984 he went blind.
“When I went back to the UCH in early October 1984, the doctor checked the eye drop that I used and said that it has expired before we bought it. My dad then asked him what the solution was? They said my eyes had been damaged.”
In fact, he added, of the four children of his parents, only one has escaped blindness.
“My parents gave birth to four children. But out of the four, only one of us is not blind.
“I want the government and Nigerian citizens to provide me with a computer or if somebody can employ me as a computer operator. So that I will not be a beggar on the street again,” he pleaded.
