her mother.
Apart from being born with Sickle Cell anaemia, Halimat’s health condition has deteriorated so much that it has damaged —- irreparably—- her two kidneys.
In a ‘To Whom Letter’ by the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, signed by one of its consultant Physicians/Nephrologists at the Dialysis Centre, Dr M.O. Mabayoje, Halimat is said to at the risk of death, except help comes urgently.
According to the letter, “ This young lady suffers Sickle Cell Disease. Unfortunately, her sickle cell disease is now complicated by Sickle Cell Nephropathy. The nephropathy has progressed over the years, so both her kidneys have been irreversibly damaged and Adebimpe now has End-Stage Renal Disease.”
The letter adds that the only “palliative treatment for” Halimat’s disease “is haemodialysis,” to be carried out “ every four days, pending a live donor related kidney transplants.”
Halimat was thereafter referred to Dialyzer Special Hospital for dialysis.
Halimat’s mother, Mrs. Hassan Oluwatoyin Abimbola, a civil servant, has been running from pillar to post, seeking help to safe her daughter’s life.
In an interview with The Guardian at her home in Lagos, the woman said Halimat’s life-threatening condition has turned her a beggar.
“Her father and I have been running everywhere. We have exhausted our life savings on her. “Halimat’s mother recounted to The Guardian that initially, she was expending about N200,000 weekly on her daughter’s dialysis for about three months in a private hospital in Lagos before she was transferred to LUTH.
“And at LUTH, the price was fairer. At least, we have been paying N35,000 every three days and over N70,000 weekly for dialysis, inclusive of drugs and artificial kidney materials we have been buying.”
In spite of these efforts however, Halimat is battling the most excruciating pains of her life. Besides the burden of a protruding belly which she carries around, the young lady’s former robust and beautiful form has emaciated considerably. In fact, she needs help to get around, a development that has made her house-ridden since last year.
The illness has also jeopardised her ambition of a university education.
“I have been practically turned to a beggar. Every two days, I have to source N40,000 for her dialysis. After exhausting her father’s savings and mine, we have been practically begging anyone to come to our rescue. It’s so pathetic seeing her going through such excruciating pains. I can’t bare it any longer, it makes me cry everyday,” her mother added.
Halimat could not speak at the time The Guardian reporter visited her home. She had just come back from hospital for her dialysis and was too tired to talk. But it was obvious that the young lady was in pains and needed urgent help.
According to Halimat’s mother, an Indian-based specialist hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital PVT. Limited, has brought the good news that a sum of N8m would cover a surgical kidney transplant on her.
“…Eventually, doctors at LUTH decided that Halimat would need kidney transplant abroad. The cost of the transplant is put at N8million. We have consulted an Indian-based specialist hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital PVT. Ltd. The hospital is located at Block F, Chakkas, Palam Vihar, Gurgaon—122017, Haeyana, India.”
To rescue Halimat Hassan from the jaws of imminent death, a sum of N8million is needed. Her parents are therefore appealing to well-meaning Nigerians, including the federal, state, local governments; corporate, religious and international organizations and individuals for help.
