Crime: FG urged to abolish capital punishment

Avocats Sans Frontiers, France, otherwise known as Lawyers Without Borders, has asked the Federal Government to stop the implementation of the death penalty.

ASF France Head of Mission, Nigeria, Celine Lemmel, made
the call on Thursday in Abuja, while speaking to our correspondent on the outcome of the ‘Promotion of the United Nations Convention Against Torture Project’, which was implemented in parts of the country between January 2009 and October 2012.

The report of the PROCAT Project showed that the police relied mainly on torture to obtain confession from suspects, a development, which has prompted ASF France to seek a review of some death sentences passed in the country.

Lemmel urged the Federal Government to take a decision against capital punishment by signing a moratorium on death penalty.

She said, “Death penalty exists in Nigeria; people are convicted but for many years, there have been no execution. It means that, in reality, there is no implementation of death penalty in the country. So, we want the government to sign a moratorium to stop execution officially and to stop even convicting people to death.
