A woman’s choice of career is linked to the length of her fingers, according to a study.
Women whose index finger was short compared to their ring finger were more likely to have what was regarded as a traditionally male job, such as a lawyer or a manager in industry, the researchers found.
And those whose index finger was longer than their ring finger were more likely to be employed in a stereotypically female career, such as nursing or primary school teaching.

This finger ratio – known as the 2D:4D (digit) ratio – is related to the amount of testosterone (male hormone) that the foetus is exposed to in the womb.
Those with a shorter 2D:4D ratio have been exposed to more testosterone than those with a longer 2D:4D ratio.
For the study, researchers from the National Research University in Russia analysed data from 1,500 men and women whose fingers were measured using digital callipers.
They found that significant differences in the 2D:4D differences were observed only for women and mostly for the left hand.
Professor John Nye, who led the study, said: ‘For women, it is now known that those with high exposure to prenatal testosterone are more likely to show greater confidence, aggressiveness, and risk-taking.
‘But how it affects jobs is unclear – are women with these characteristics more likely to pick those jobs or do cultural norms select for or against women (or men) with certain characteristics? We don’t know.
‘That’s why it’s important to do these studies in different cultures with different ethnic groups and in very different conditions to figure out what’s driving what.’
The study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
A University of Oxford study published last week found that the 2D:4D ratio could also help to predict faithfulness.
Those with ring fingers and index fingers of similar length were more likely to be faithful lovers, while those with a longer ring finger were more likely to cheat.
