LATEST! Buhari appoints Mahmud Yakubu as new INEC Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Mahmud Yakubu as new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Yakubu, a professor of political history and international studies, was Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State who briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting said the appointment was consequently......
approved at the first meeting of the Council of State presided over by Buhari.

Similarly, President Muhammadu Buhari also named five new national commissioners for the commission.

The following were appointed as INEC commissioners:

-Mrs Amina Zakari (Jigawa)–North-West

-Dr Antonla Taiye Okoosi (Kogi)–North-central

-Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (Borno)–North-east

-Dr Mohammed Mustafa (Edo)–South-south

-Mr Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (Ogun)—South-west

While the Council of State resolved that Ambassador Lawrence Nwuruku who is currently representing the South-east should remain.

Meanwhile, the Council of States on Wednesday confirmed Professor Mahmud Yakubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The confirmation was made at the council’s emergency meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Before his new appointment, Mr. Yakubu was the executive secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

He was a member of Oby Ezekwesili Educational Transformation Team.

He was also a member of the 2014 National Conference.

He is a Professor of Political History and International Studies. Yakubu is an Expert in Guerrilla Warfare, Terrorism and Counter Terrorism. He also teaches War and Society in Pre Colonial Africa.

Professor Yakubu is the first and only First Class graduate of history from the North till date, who was on secondment from the Nigeria Defense Academy where he was a lecturer to the Federal Ministry of Education.
