Social media company Facebook suspended the account of a woman named Isis – and wouldn’t accept that she was a person, not a global terrorist organisation, even when she sent in a scan of her passport.
Her account was apparently suspended because of her first name’s association with the Islamic State terrorist organisation, called ISIS or Daesh.
Isis Anchalee, an engineer based in San Francisco, tweeted ‘Why would you disable my personal account? MY REAL NAME IS ISIS ANCHALEE /facepalm.’ after Facebook froze her account on Monday.
Isis had to ‘verify’ her identity three times – including by sending in a scan of her passport – before Facebook would accept that she was a human being, rather than a sinister Syrian death cult.
Eventually, a Facebook engineer got in touch with her and wrote, ‘Isis, sorry about this. I don’t know what happened. I’ve reported it to the right people and we’re working on fixing it.’
Facebook has a “real names” policy which forbids people from using fake names or ‘offensive’ words.
