#Ebola: US Approves Liberia Request To Send Untested Drug

Ebola workers

Liberia has said it will receive doses of an experimental Ebola drug to treat infected doctors in the West African country.

A statement, published on the Liberian presidency's website on Monday, said the United States had approved a request from Liberia's President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to ship the medicine, ZMapp, after a direct appeal to US President Barack Obama on Friday.

However, a spokesperson for the US Health and Human Services (HHS) Department said US authorities had simply assisted in connecting the Liberian government with the drug's manufacturer.

When a vicious militant group kidnapped nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls in April, much of the world was outraged. The Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurGirls went viral, spawning broad concern from people around the globe — and smug derision from critics of digital advocacy.
Four months later, about 60 of the girls have managed to escape and the rest remain missing. The world has mostly moved on, distracted by such events as wars in Gaza and Ukraine, the shoot down of a Malaysian jetliner and the immigration crisis at the U.S. border.
But amid all the horrors that regularly compete for the world’s attention, this one shouldn’t be forgotten.
For one thing, the teenage captives are symbols of the importance of educating girls. They were all seized after returning to school in a dangerous area to take their final exams. Among them are future lawyers, doctors and teachers — women who could someday help lead their country.
USA Today, in an editorial on Tuesday, queried President Goodluck Jonathan’s response to enquiries about the Chibok girls at the ongoing U.S.-African Leaders Summit in Washington DC. As far as the newspaper is concerned, the president’s response does not inspire confidence

Playing hard to get makes it hard to find Mr. /Ms. Right. You need not pretend to be busy when asked out on a date; neither should you feign nonchalance when you really desire that person asking you out. There is a chance that when you change gear, it can be someone who will make you unhappy.

In this interview, Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, bares his mind on the deadly ebola virus. He also speaks on the strike by doctors, passionately appealed to them to call it off.

His words: “If doctors are not at their posts, we would have a challenge.  And some people have even written that part of the reason  the index case was successfully handled was because doctors were on strike and, if not, the index case may have been taken to a public health facility.  How true that is I don’t know; but as the Minister of Health, I would want the doctors to call off their strike.  In the event that we, God forbid, have more cases, we would need the doctors”.

LASTEST!! WHO declares #Ebola ‘an international emergency’

Ebola workers

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa to be an international public health emergency that requires an extraordinary response to stop its spread.
WHO declared similar emergencies for the swine flu pandemic in 2009 and for polio in May.
The WHO chief, Dr Margaret Chan, said the announcement on Friday is “a clear call for international solidarity” but acknowledged that many countries would probably not have any Ebola cases.
“Countries affected to date simply do not have the capacity to manage an outbreak of this size and complexity on their own,” Chan said at a news conference in Geneva.
“I urge the international community to provide this support on the most urgent basis possible,” she added.
The agency had convened an expert committee this week to assess the severity of the ongoing epidemic – the largest and longest in history.
The current outbreak of Ebola began in Guinea in March and has since spread to Sierra Leone and Liberia.
There is no licenced treatment or vaccine for Ebola and the death rate has been about 50 percent.

#Ebola: 40 Reportedly Quarantined In #Lagos

Ebola workers

SaharaReporters has learned that as many as 40 persons may have been quarantined in Lagos on suspicion of Ebola infection, and some of them may already have tested positive.
In an email to fellow members of an Igbo group (Igboville), John Okiyi Kalu, told the story of a nurse who became a member last December and joined an effort to provide free medical services in Aba.
That member, who subsequently took a job in Lagos this year, appears to have been one of the nurses who attended to Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian who died of Ebola in the city last week.  One of those nurses died yesterday.
Mr. Kalu said in the email that his group wants to launch twitter and facebook campaigns starting on Friday morning using the hash tag, #GiveThemExperimentalDrugs to draw attention to their plight, and to prevail on the United States to send the drugs to needy African countries.
“It is inhuman to keep people and wait for them to die,” he said, noting he was writing, “with my head bowed in tears and agony.”
