NGOs to raise N10bn for cancer care centre |
The National Cancer
Prevention Programme in collaboration with
the Lulu-Briggs Foundation
has said that it would be establishing a comprehensive cancer care
centre in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The National
Coordinator, NCPP, Dr. King Egwuonwu, who disclosed this at a press
conference organised by the organisations in Lagos, said the centre,
which would be situated on a 50-hectares of land close to the University
of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on completion, would gulp N10bn.
Egwuonwu said the first
phase which would be completed within the year should be inaugurated by
next year and should admit its first set of patients by February next
year.
He said, “The centre
would be developed in five phases with each phase costing about N2bn.
The five phases could be established concurrently given the availability
of funds.”
Egwuonwu, who noted that
about 100,000 Nigerians were diagnosed with cancer and 80,000 die from
the disease annually, said the centre was to avert the number of deaths
from cancer.
He said that the
initiative although capital intensive was the brain child of the
respected philanthropist, Dr Lulu-Briggs and his wife, Seinye, and as
the focal persons, would also mobilise support, sponsorship and funds
for the project within and outside the country.
Egwuonwu said the
organisation had also partnered with the Nigerian Communication
Commissions to facilitate participation from the public in raising funds
for the project, as Nigerians could make donations through their mobile
phones using a short code to be provided by the telecommunication
companies in the country.
He noted that the
centre, which would be manned by professional oncologists, would be
equipped with state of the art cancer care facilities which include CT
scan, Bone Scan and Pet Scans (Positron Emission Tomography), which
could detect areas of cancer by obtaining images of the body cells as
they work.
