Two lawyers fight to represent armed robbery suspect in court!

There was big trouble at a Magistrate’s Court in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday when
two lawyers, Mr. Azeez Agbaje and Mr. Adetodun Adesida, struggled to take over the legal representation of six suspected armed robbers arraigned by the state police command.
The accused were charged with attacking Diamond Bank on November 22,2011 while armed with AK 47 rifles, rocket launchers, chain bullets, dynamites and guns to blow the security door of the bank and carted away a sum of N30m and handsets valued at over N200, 000, contrary to and punishable under Section 1 and 2 of the Robbery and Firearms Act.
They were accused of killing four persons, Messrs Tunde Adebo, Tunde Obiesan, Atolagbe Sunday and Bankole Olowoyelu during the robbery operation that remains one of the bloodiest in the state.
They were brought to the court for the first time amid tight security on Thursday yesterday.
The accused are Ikechukwu Maduagwu (20); Adewale Adeolu (39); Fayemi Olubusuyi (39); Mukaila Raji (30); Ropo Adeleye (45)and Dele Olokpa (40).

However, 'Kasala' busted after the police prosecutor, Mr Zakari Mohammed, announced his appearance for the state, Adesida stood up to announce his appearance for the accused.
He claimed that the families of the accused had contacted his principal, Mr. Adelanke Akerata.
Just as he was about to take his seat, another lawyer, Agbaje, stood up and announced his appearance for all the accused.
An obviously confused Magistrate Johnson Adelegan asked the lawyers to sort themselves out.

Agbaje told the court that the accused had approached him in the morning and he had agreed to take their brief. But Adesida insisted that he had already taken the brief of the accused before then.
When the matter of the legal representation was taking too much time, the magistrate asked the accused to identify their lawyer among the two and they all pointed to Agbaje.
The magistrate then appealed to Adesida to withdraw his appearance at that stage in the interest of the profession to avoid “washing our dirty linen outside.” ????

  3. It is not about hungry lawyers, the truth is Nigerian lawyers have lost so much respect in the eyes of the common man. There is so much impunity in the Nigeria judicial system.
