The Director-General of the NYSC,
Brig.-Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Afia, said in Abuja on Thursday said that the NYSC
was disturbed by the molestation of female corps members in some parts
of the country, hence
the decision to introduce Women National Youth Service Corps members to learn martial arts for self-defence..
He said, “We had issues of female corps members being molested by Okada riders
commercial motorcycle operators and traditional rulers. The reason is
that if these young ladies had some form of training in self-defence,
they will be able to say no in more ways than one.
“We will give these young ladies girls a
fighting chance so that if they are faced with such a situation, before
the deed is done, these young corps members will probably no longer be
helpless victims.”
