Police deny looting in Okene..

Policemen drafted to Okene in Kogi State to restore peace and order following last week's attacks, are alleged to have resorted to looting and burning down shops in the town.
An alarm had been raised by
the Senator from the area, Nurudeen Usman Abattemi over the in human treatment melted on innocent residents by soldiers sent to keep the peace. However, an eyewitness who spoke to journalists in Lokoja on Sunday said that while soldiers were going about their work, the police have now resorted to harassing the innocent people as house to house search intensifies.
Shop owners also raised the alarm, claiming that mobile policemen were hiding under the cover of searching for weapons to loot shops.
Commuters passing through the town to the western parts of the country are not left out of the situation as they were often asked to trek a long distance out of the town before they boarding their vehicles after they were thoroughly searched.
Properties worth several millions were said to have been looted from shops across the town while some were burnt.
However, police spokesman for the state Simon Ille, said the whole story was a false alarm. Ille said no police man will contemplate such action and anybody caught in that can will face the full weight of law.
