Nigeria’s rave-of-the-moment in athletics, Blessing Okagbare may have ended up having her career ruined by coaches, who wanted to mess her up while she was coming up in Sapele, Delta State, but for the quick intervention of theincumbent Director of Sports in the state, Victor Onagagamue.
Onagagamue, in a chat with Daily Sunsports in London, expressed joy over the rise and rise of Okagbare, even as he recalled how some randy coaches in Delta State wanted to sleep with the young Blessing to the detriment of her career. “I am happy to see Blessing competing on the big stage today. But for my quick intervention, some coaches back home in Sapele would have messed her up. When she was coming up, I noticed that what some of the so-called coaches wanted from her was sex.
I quickly dislodged them by personally monitoring her career. I changed the coaches that were training her and today, I am happy that the wisdom I applied has paid off. “Blessing is a very disciplined athlete, who never wanted to bulge to the overture of those randy coaches. In fact, she was the one that revealed what she was going through and I had to wade in alongside Chief Solomon Ogba (then the sports commissioner in Delta State and now the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria) to save her career,” Onagagamue disclosed.
He pointed out that Delta State is doing well today in sports because he has succeeded in sanitizing the stable by weeding and throwing out the coaches whose stock in trade was to go out with female athletes. The Delta State sports director, who is the chairman of Nigerian Directors of Sports Forum, said though he could not claim to be a saint, he could beat his chest and claim that he does not mess around with his athletes and members of staff.
“I may not be a saint, but I can beat my chest and say that I have not, and will never have any form of amorous relationship with my athletes and coaches, or with any staff of the Sports Council. That is the only way to get the best out of them. “I know the implications of having illicit relationship with the athletes and I make sure that I run away from it. In fact, I come hard on any coach that indulges in it,” Onagagamue said. To stay out of trouble, the sports personality unwinds down with tennis, a recreation he enjoys after each day’s work. “Playing tennis has helped me a great deal to stay out of troubles and women.
