THE arrival of a new baby is usually met with celebration—- especially if it is a baby boy. This would have been the story of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Onoja who were blessed with a baby boy on October 5, 2012 —- after a successful Caesarian operation at the Braithwaite Medical hospital, Port Harcourt.
However, their joy was punctuated with the following developments. The baby, Nelson Onoja, was taken to the intensive baby care unit for examination. The breathing appeared faster than normal. Pneumonia was suspected after five days. Several checks were conducted, including X-ray and other usual tests. The result of ECG on the 10th day appeared to
threaten the joy of the couple even more. Nelson was diagnosed with Acyanotic Heart Disease, a Congenital heart condition.
Two days later, he was referred to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, but was admitted after an Echo test confirmed that it was a cyanotic heart defect (CHD). The PDA was of 5mm in diameter. The child was placed on oxygen and taken back to UPTH where he was subjected to more intensive care until the parents can raise about N2million to effect the treatment abroad where he has to undergo surgery to close the hole in the heart.   The father, a teacher, said he has run into debts already due to medical bills and could not raise this cash within the period required to do this surgery in India or Israel.  The cost includes air fare and accommodation.
