Didier Drogba and Jose Mourinho could return to Chelsea next season |
Drogba and Mourinho are preparing to
meet each other in battle as Galatasaray and Real Madrid face-off in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Spain on Wednesday.
But come next season, the two former Champions League winners may be reunited at Stamford Bridge, with Drogba believing the Blues need the services of the ‘Special One’ to send them back to the top of the Premier League.
Chelsea are currently 22 points behind league leaders Manchester United with poor results early in the season costing former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo the top job.
And his replacement, former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, has struggled to win over some sections of the Stamford Bridge faithful despite guiding the Blues to the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Europa Cup and FA Cup respectively.
"I think for the club it is the best solution to bring José back," Drogba told The Guardian. "The fans want him back. He loves Chelsea.
"I don't think he has got over Chelsea and they haven't got over him. When he came he brought success; we won league titles back-to-back with some great football and the only thing he didn't win was the Champions League.
“Maybe that is one of the reasons why he might want to come back. It is unfinished business.
“He is a winner and is close to the players. He went to Inter and is at Real Madrid but (he) is still talking about Chelsea, so he loves this club.
“Because you want to rebuild a team and to give them the strength we had a few years ago, he could be the right person.”
Before Drogba joined Galatasaray in the January transfer window, there were rumours the Ivory Coast international would return to the Blues after being spotted training with his former team-mates in December.
But despite eventually joining Fatih Terim’s side, Drogba admits a return to London could not be far off the horizon.
